Family History

Tony (born Antonio) Tancredi is a direct descendant of Tancrede de Hauteville, founder of the Royal House of Hauteville and brother in law to William The Conqueror.

The coat of arms illustrated commemorates the wedding of Tancrede's great granddaughter, Constance of Scicily, with Prince Henry of Hohenstaufen. Their son and heir, Frederick II of Scicily, was also Holy Roman Emperor, King of Germany, Burgundy, Cyprus, Corfu, Malta as well as much of the coastland of North Africa and the Latin kingdom of Outremers (modern day Syria and Lebanon) Frederick led the sixth crusade to Jerusalem and crowned himself King of Jerusalem. These achievements represent the pinnacle of influence of the Tancredi family; however over the centuries they continued to inspire. There is the painting by Poussin in the Hermitage of Tancrede and Erminia.Voltaire based his play "Tancrede" on the founder of the dynasty, and Rossini wrote his masterpiece opera "Tancredi" as an homage to the family.

However, in today's egalitarian society this is nothing more than an anachronism, but Tony believes that just as his famous ancestor, Frederick of Sicily, was known at the time as "Stupor Mundi" (Astonishment of the World) he hopes that you, in some small way, might be astonished or thoroughly satisfied, at least, with the service that you receive at his Barbican studio.
